The Senate talks testing.

It was a short but hectic week in Tallahassee!

The Senate discussed several bills on Wednesday, including the notorious testing bill CS/CS/SB 616 by Senator John Legg (R-Lutz). There was a heated debate over the 20+ amendments filed to the bill, which brought the provisions in the Senate and House bills a bit closer. The bill still does not address state testing issues, which are a serious concern for teachers and parents across the state.

The legislators' frustration was evident as debate continued over the use of test results from the admittedly flawed test administration. Senate President Andy Gardiner (R-Orlando) acknowledged that while he had expected to pass this bill on to third reading, too many questions remain unanswered. Further discussion on the bill was postponed until the Senate reconvenes today at 2:00PM. We expect further changes to be made to this bill as the Senate and House reconcile their increasingly similar versions.

In other news, the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education met today to discuss parent and student rights. FEA is concerned that bills in both the House and Senate expand charter school opportunities. They also broaden the definition of adjunct teacher to include full-time instructors and increase student transfer opportunities across district boundaries and teacher classrooms.

Other topics of interest:

  • Guns on school and college campuses
  • Education budget

Keep in mind, these bills change by the minute. Anything can happen during the legislative session.

Notice: The Senate will be in session TODAY at 2:00PM and will take up CS/HB 7069 by Representative Marlene O'Toole (R-The Villages) and the House Pre K-12 Education Committee.

Stay tuned for an update Monday morning with the results of this meeting.
