FEA Action Alert

Looks like the Florida Senate is going to be fooled again into passing the Best and Brightest program.

With just over a week left, it looks like the Legislature will pass a budget that barely moves the needle and plans to resurrect the insulting Best and Brightest teacher “scholarship” program.

Be warned - the Legislature will try to convince voters that they are providing historic funding for education with this budget. However, this budget is anything but historic. The truth is that when adjusted for inflation, Florida is actually spending hundreds of dollars less per student than it should be in order to reach record spending levels.

Without adjusting for inflation, our schools and school districts can purchase less, pay our teachers and education staff professionals less and provide less for our students. Florida continues to be ranked near the bottom of all the states on per pupil spending. This budget proposal is not designed to ensure our students receive the best public education possible, much less adequately compensate our public school employees.

To add insult to injury, it looks like lawmakers are planning to pass the Best and Brightest program again. This comes after members of the Legislature admitted to being embarrassed that it was slipped into the budget last year. Newspapers across the state have said this program is absurd and called it “a reckless use of taxpayer money.”

Take a stand.

Click here to email senators and tell them they must stop with the insults. Florida’s public school students are worth more than a 1 percent increase in per student funding and a ridiculous “scholarship” program.

Sincerely,

Joanne M. McCall, President
