FEA Action Alert

Dear activist,

The House Speaker is at it again. HB 7055 – this year’s bigger, badder version of HB 7069 – will be heard tomorrow at 9:00AM in the House Appropriations committee, with a full vote by the House likely next week. We need you to contact your legislator, tell them why this bill is detrimental to our public school students, and ask them to oppose it.

The House has cobbled together dozens of unrelated bills into this monster train bill, with 58 separate statutes addressing everything from issues affecting school boards, vouchers, student testing, union busting, principal programs, to charter schools, tort liability, web-based efficiency, cell phones and reading curriculum. What’s worse, more than half of the issues have never been vetted by a single Education Committee.

HB 7055 is the latest shameful attempt to hurt our public schools. It is bad for children, a false choice for parents, and it hurts our teachers. The bill does nothing to address the real problems public education is currently facing, such as teacher shortage, lack of funding and dilapidating infrastructure in our public schools.

Remember, this 198 page bill singles out only the unions representing instructional personnel -meaning classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, librarians and those involved in student personnel services - for decertification. These unions must report and maintain 50% membership density to keep their bargaining agent status. This is a direct attack on your collective bargaining rights and your contract.

We will continue to update you as we learn more.

In solidarity,

Joanne M. McCall, President
Florida Education Association
